Safely working with tractors in Agriculture
One of the biggest threats on the farm is also one of our most commonly used vehicles. Tractors are essential and powerful, but without proper care and safety precautions, they can be dangerous.
So, before you do any activities on the farm, use the Stop Think Act model to make sure you'll be safe.
First, STOP. Before operating a tractor, consider all potential scenarios.
Could the tractor roll over?
Could it hit or harm someone? What could the damage be to me, others, or property?
Would you know what to do in the event of a tractor rollover or if your tractor rolls over without a Roll Over Protection Structure?
What could happen if I got caught in an open Power Take Off?
Then, THINK. Before starting the tractor, make sure you understand the job properly and have been adequately trained to complete it.
The tractor is fueled in working condition with functional lights and ready to go.
Make sure it has a Roll Over Protection Structure and seatbelt.
The tractor has the correct hitch pins and sway chains.
You know the rules of the road applicable to tractors.
You have a ‘Slow Moving Vehicle’ sign if you are going onto the road.
You know how to communicate with others.
You are mentally and physically ready to work.
Now. ACT. While operating the tractor, never step across a Power Take Off. Always go around equipment and people. No shortcuts!
Make eye contact with operators before moving into a path of travel.
Wear highly visible clothing so everyone can see you.
There should never be more than one person per tractor - only the driver!
If you have any questions or see anything unsafe, talk to your supervisor. By staying alert and aware, you can go home safe at the end of the day.
